Nitrous oxide and turbos, a
volatile duo or an unnecessary
gaseous combination?
Racing enthusiasts agree that
whether you're talking about
turbochargers, superchargers or
nitrous oxide; it's all about
setup and proper tuning. The
purpose of these is to improve
upon the size-to-output
efficiency of an engine by
solving one of its cardinal
limitations. Nitrous oxide as a
stand-alone method of forced
induction is arguably more
popular albeit just as volatile.
NOS makes slow cars quicker…
attracting more and more
amateurs to the street racing
scene with a modest cost. The
internal combustion with a lean
air/ fuel mixture leads to
excessive cylinder pressure. The
turbocharger makes it possible
to add more fuel to increase
engine out put, thus increases
the pressure at the point where
air is entering the cylinder,
and the amount of air brought
into the cylinder is largely a
function of time and pressure.
As pressure increases more air
is drawn in. In addition, the
intake pressure can be
controlled to bleed-off excess
boost from the turbocharger.
Superchargers operate in the
same fashion as a turbo;
however, the energy to spin the
compressor is taken from the
rotating output energy of the
engine's crankshaft as opposed
to exhaust gas. It converts some
of the thermal energy from the
exhaust gas, these are actually
heat engines. What do we have to
